Book Review: Impossible Beyond This Point by Virgil, Marcella & Joel Horn

Hi all,

When I first began publishing my novels, I became acquainted with a lovely lady named Crystal Marie who is a writer, blogger, and a talented quilt maker. She had told me she was working on editing/proofreading a family book about their journey into the wilderness to achieve a self-sustainable life. I found this interesting. It isn't easy for people today to grasp the idea of giving up all modern conveniences to dedicate their lives to becoming self-sufficient. So, when Crystal offered to send me a copy of the book after it was published, I was thrilled. Here is more about this true life story and my five star review.

Impossible Beyond This Point
Virgil Horn, Marcella Horn, Joel Horn, Authors

Book Description:

The true story of one family's struggle and triumph creating a self-sufficient life in the wilderness. Join the Horn family on the adventure of a lifetime. Learn how a couple from the city moved to the wilderness with three small boys and carved out a life in the middle of nowhere that has endured for nearly 50 years.

With nearly 400 pages and over 100 photos, Impossible Beyond This Point is a compelling must-read for anyone interested in (or contemplating) getting away from it all.

My 5 Star Review:

Imagine you are getting close to forty years old, you have a family to support, an established life and a home, and then deciding to pack it all up and move to the wilderness. That is exactly what Virgil and Marcella and their three young sons did in the late 1960s. After deciding to purchase land in the Trinity Alps in northern California which also included a gold mine, they packed up their family and left their southern California home to start a new life. And although it wasn't easy by any means, and they had many setbacks, together as a family they persevered.

Told in a way that makes you feel you are following along on their journey, Impossible Beyond This Point chronicles the highs and lows that the Horn family experienced as they carved out their lives in their new home in the wilderness. From their first years in the tiny cabin to the building of their permanent home, you read almost every detail of their experience. I enjoyed the stories of the people they met, the animals they encountered, and the triumphs they experienced. It is truly an inspiring story, one you will ponder over long after you've finished reading it. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a true life adventure.

About Joel Horn:

Barely five years old when his family moved from southern California to the wilderness, Joel Horn and his two brothers grew up in the rugged Trinity Alps, learning how to do the numerous and varied tasks necessary for survival while carving out a life in the remote paradise they dubbed the Flat. Living this self-reliant life and tutored by the best of teachers, their dad and hands-on experience, they achieved a level of self-sufficiency rarely seen in modern times.

Joel is a veteran with three deployments during his 20 years as a UH-1 and UH-60 crew chief in the California National Guard. Like his father, Joel is also an artist and jeweler and works from home in the family businesses, Horn's Jewelry and Rock Climbing Jewelry. Joel continues to live on the Flat today, with his wife of nearly two decades and his mother and brothers close by.

In his first book, Impossible Beyond This Point , Joel combines his parents' writings with his own recollections to create a fascinating and entertaining account of the family's struggle and triumph creating a self-sufficient life in the wilderness.

Hi all,

I recently read Jan Romes' latest novel, MARRIED TO MAGGIE, and I can't say enough nice things about it. I have read almost all of Jan's novels and have enjoyed each one very much. MARRIED TO MAGGIE is no exception. In fact, I think it is Jan's absolute best one so far! And the best part is it is the first in the Texas Boys Falling Fast series by Jan. If you love a good romance novel, you'll love novels by Jan Romes!

Here is more about the novel and my five star review.

My 5 Star Review:

It is easy to enjoy novels by Jan Romes, and MARRIED TO MAGGIE proves it. She doesn't write basic boy meets girl novels – she writes fun and interesting stories that make you laugh and warm your heart all at once.

In MARRIED TO MAGGIE, we meet the rich, adorable, and somewhat cocky Ty Vincent who is in desperate need of finding a wife, fast. In order to prove he's capable of running the family oil business, he needs to prove he's stopped his playboy ways and is finally settling down. So, what's the best way to do that? Make a deal with a steadfast woman who will make him look good, that's how. When Ty meets Maggie Gray, he's met his match. She won't put up with his foolishness and tells him like it is. But she does agree to a contract to marry him to help him. Why? She needs the money after being laid off from her nursing job. It's just a contract – a deal – and nothing more. Or is it? Has Ty finally met his match?

MARRIED TO MAGGIE is full of twists and turns, making you wonder who is conning who and how it will end up. But no matter who loves who, it is assured you will fall in love with this novel and Jan Romes' creativity!
