Book Review: I’d Rather Be Growing Grapes by Jan Romes

Hi all,

If you love sweet, witty, and fun romances then you should be reading novels by Jan Romes. I’ve read nearly every novel she has ever written, and I’ve enjoyed them all. The stories are sharp, entertaining, laugh-out-loud funny, plus sexy and heartwarming. What more could you want? Jan’s latest novel, I’d Rather Be Growing Grapes is, I have to say, my favorite one of hers so far. You’re going to love it! Here is more about the novel and my review.

I'd Rather Be Growing Grapes
Cover by Tugboat Design

Jan Romes

Book Description:

Sabrina Kerrigan is a sassy, independent woman whose fiancĂ© ditched her a week before they were to be married. Since then, she gives all her attention to a backyard filled with flowers and a spindly grape arbor. Her meddling twin, Lilith, thinks Sabrina’s had enough time to grieve the relationship that wasn’t meant to be. Lil registers her to be one of twenty-one bachelorettes who will vie for one guy’s heart in an event called Pick Me. Sabrina is furious at Lil for immersing her in what is sure to be three weeks of nonstop chaos. The only reason she agreed to take part is because the entry fee goes to charity. The minute Sabrina arrives at the hotel a case of mistaken identity sets the chaos in motion.

Millionaire winery owner, Beau Reinholt has had the worst luck with women. He seems to pick those interested in his money not him. His best friend, Marco Santaguida, the director for Pick Me, cons Beau into being this year’s bachelor. Beau agrees on one condition - the women aren’t to know his true identity until he either falls in love or finds extreme-like with one of the candidates. Everything goes smoothly until he meets Sabrina Kerrigan. She ticks him off right away. She also turns him on. The more Beau tries to focus on the twenty other women the more he’s drawn to the one who says she doesn’t want any part of him.

Can two wounded people tune out the noise going on around them to listen to their hearts?

My 5 Star Review:

Sabrina Kerrigan’s twin sister, Lilith, decides to take it upon herself to find her a mate. So she signs her up for a local fundraiser based on The Bachelor called Pick Me. Sassy Sabrina wants nothing to do with it, but when she finds out how much money her sister paid for the event, she agrees. Her hope is to hide in the background and be one of the first women to leave.

Enter bachelor Beau Reinholt. Sexy, handsome, and oh, so delicious. Even when Sabrina fights with him, she can’t help but find herself falling for him. But Beau, who was also conned into doing this gig, only wants to get through the three weeks and get out of there. He doesn’t believe he’ll find his soul mate among the twenty-one women who paid to be there. But as the days go by, he begins to find his thoughts are constantly on Sabrina. Can he really find true love amidst all the chaos?

I’d Rather Be Growing Grapes is packed with wit, humor, and charm. Jan puts together a wonderful cast of characters that fills this story with all kinds of crazy scenarios so you don’t want to put the book down. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and I’m sure anyone who loves a good romantic comedy will love it too. Thank you, Jan, for another entertaining novel! Can’t wait for the next one.

Book Review: Mr. August by Jan Romes

Hi all,

Reading one of Jan Romes novels is always a pleasure. That's why I read them! I know that I will always be entertained. Here is a review of the latest Jan Romes novel that I've read, MR. AUGUST. Also, be sure to check out her "Texas Boys Falling Fast" series including Married to Maggie and Keeping Kylee. You can read more of my reviews of Jan's books below.

Mr. August

Jan Romes

Fashion designer Libby Griffin has had the week from hell--terminated from her job and heart-wrenching news from the doctor. Hoping for time alone to regroup, Libby rents a cabin on Grand Lake St. Mary's for five months. Right away she meets the most irritating man on the planet, who also happens to be drop-dead delicious.

Recently divorced author Maxwell August has a book due, and his muse has gone into hiding. With a chip on his shoulder, his writing in stuck-mode, he heads to the lake only to encounter a monumental distraction with blonde hair and hazel eyes.

Will these two right-brainers allow the off-the-charts attraction brewing between them to grow? Or deny it to focus on the things they think are more important and miss a chance at forever?

My Five Star Review:

Fashion designer Libby Griffin is hiding out for the winter at a lake cabin to lick her wounds and concentrate on her design career. Not only has her friend and employer fired her, but she's learned some bad news from her doctor. As hard as it is, she's going to try to push away the past and look forward to starting over. Then enters Mr. August from the cabin next door. Maxwell August is a bestselling author who has to finish his latest novel and get it to his publisher on time. He locks himself away in the cabin next door to Libby to work and not be disturbed. Except the sight of Libby disturbs him completely—in a good way. But he's not looking for a romantic encounter any more than Libby is. Unfortunately, they are finding it hard to resist each other.

Once again, Jan Romes has written a witty, heartwarming romance with colorful characters and a fun, fast-paced plot. Libby has her own sense of style while Max is more conservative, yet somehow he finds he cannot keep his mind off of her. Through a series of mishaps, they find themselves both fighting with each other and unable to keep their hands off of each other. I liken Ms. Romes romances to the witty romances written by Janet Evanovich before she became famous for her Stephanie Plum series. Cute, fun, sometimes crazy, and definitely endearing. You can never go wrong with a romance by Jan Romes.

My 5 Star Review:

It is easy to enjoy novels by Jan Romes, and MARRIED TO MAGGIE proves it. She doesn't write basic boy meets girl novels – she writes fun and interesting stories that make you laugh and warm your heart all at once.

In MARRIED TO MAGGIE, we meet the rich, adorable, and somewhat cocky Ty Vincent who is in desperate need of finding a wife, fast. In order to prove he's capable of running the family oil business, he needs to prove he's stopped his playboy ways and is finally settling down. So, what's the best way to do that? Make a deal with a steadfast woman who will make him look good, that's how. When Ty meets Maggie Gray, he's met his match. She won't put up with his foolishness and tells him like it is. But she does agree to a contract to marry him to help him. Why? She needs the money after being laid off from her nursing job. It's just a contract – a deal – and nothing more. Or is it? Has Ty finally met his match?

MARRIED TO MAGGIE is full of twists and turns, making you wonder who is conning who and how it will end up. But no matter who loves who, it is assured you will fall in love with this novel and Jan Romes' creativity!

My 5 Star Review:

The Christmas Contract is possibly my favorite romance novel by Jan Romes.  Her novels are heartwarming stories with a fun, witty touch to them. There's never a dull moment in a Jan Romes novel. I particularly liked this one because it weaves together the story of the three sisters as they pursue love to fulfill their grandfather's wish for them to finally find the man of their dreams and settle down. It's like three novels in one – and each story is unique and heartfelt. If you are looking for a lovely holiday novel to curl up in front of the fire with, this is the one for you.

He frustrates and excites her, turns her into a klutz, and she's afraid her heart is in real danger once again.

Alex Clay is restless and trying to find his place in the business world. His boss seems to be grooming him for big things by giving him a taste of everything from the mailroom to the boardroom. He doesn't know whether to kiss her until they're both breathless, or find a new job.

My 5 Star Review:

Stella Matson is a no-nonsense type of woman who works hard and is trying to get over a recent heartbreak. She is up for a promotion at work from an ungrateful boss, that is until the new guy – a hottie – comes into the picture. And as much as Stella wants to ignore this too perfect man, she can't help but be attracted to him.

Alex Clay isn't in the advertising department to take away anyone's job or to fall in love, but when he meets Stella, his heart goes into overdrive. Even though women throw themselves at him daily, he finds he only has eyes for Stella. Stella, however, isn’t the easiest heart to conquer, leaving Alex frustrated and still wanting more.

Stella in Stilettos is the latest funny and heartfelt romance by author Jan Romes. It's witty, charming, and full of fun and romance. You can't go wrong with a novel by Jan Romes - they are all entertaining and delightful – and Stella in Stilettos is no exception.

She's dealt with people suffering from heartache and irreconcilable differences for so long that she thinks all relationships are doomed. An Excerpt from Three Days With Molly

Finn tossed and turned, punched his pillow for the hundredth time, and tried to block out the day that had been a calamity of errors. Molly was upsetting the rhythm of his life and stretching the trial basis so tight it was about to snap in two. She was a major disruption. He did a minute by minute accounting of the things that had gone wrong since her arrival. The woman stood out in the pouring rain, for crying out loud. He took a soul-cleansing breath, and made a firm decision – if tomorrow went the way today did, she was out of there.

Giving his fans the best of him for three months required one-hundred percent focus…and sleep.

He closed his eyes again and tried to clear his mind.

Fifteen minutes later he rolled to his side to stare at the clock on the nightstand. He’d been trying to shut down for hours. It was now four-thirty in the morning. He crawled out of bed and headed to the kitchen. On the way, he noticed a small light shining above Molly’s bunk. It appeared someone else couldn’t doze off.

Finn tiptoed to the fridge, poured a glass of milk, and perched himself lengthwise on the couch. He took his first sip, and Molly was suddenly there looking bedraggled but beautiful.

“I couldn’t sleep either.” She yawned and parked herself at the kitchen table.

“Join me.” Finn threw his legs off the couch to make room for her.

“Finn, I’m sorry for being a pain.” She blinked with dewy lashes.

Had she been crying? Finn’s heart clenched. “Shh,” he said. “Let’s not rehash the day. We need to relax and wipe the slate clean. Get a fresh start tomorrow.”

Their gazes connected.

“Thank you.”

For half an hour, they made small talk about the unusually hot summer, how the lack of rain – until earlier today – had put the Midwest in one of the worst droughts ever, and how the temperature had teetered close to a hundred degrees for the past week.

Molly pointed to the leather bands tied at his wrist. “Those are unique.”

Finn removed one and handed it to her. “I made them.”

“Seriously?” Molly inspected the band, turning it over, running her fingers over the soft leather. “This is really great.”

An odd emotion made him shift like he couldn’t get comfortable.

“I love how you used a guitar pick as decoration.”

Damn it all to hell, he was embarrassed. For the life of him he couldn’t figure out why. “Thanks.”

Molly handed it back.

Finn shook his head. “You can have it.”

Oh, no, I can’t accept this.”

“Sure you can. I want you to have it.” Finn tied the leather band around Molly’s wrist. “There.” He turned her wrist to show the band from every angle. “Looks pretty good.”

“It does,” she said softly. “Thank you so much.”

“My pleasure.” Finn detailed how easy it was to make the wristband – some leather cord, a few knots, and a guitar pick. He made her laugh when he shared that he broke well over a hundred picks before he got it right.

Finn loved when Molly laughed; her whole body shook.

Molly lifted an impish brow. “How’d you get it right?”

“I finally wised up and took a dozen to the jewelry store. They drilled tiny holes on each end of the pick, big enough for me to fish the leather cord through.

“You’re a complex man, Finn. There’s so much to you that it would take a lifetime to discover.” Molly scrunched her face like she couldn’t believe she said such a thing.

“Not true. I’m a simple man.” He laughed. “I just have a lot of hang-ups that make me seem complex.”

Molly touched his arm. “Tell me about the real Finn Riley, not the version that makes headlines. I’d like to get to know the guy who makes wristbands and writes songs.”

Finn slanted Molly a deprecating smile. “I did tell you about the real Finn Riley. Heartless bastard, remember?”

Molly’s eyes sparkled. Damn it. They sparkled.

Book Review: Lucky Ducks by Jan Romes

Hi all,

I have to tell you right off the bat that I am already a fan of Jan Romes! I loved her romance novel StayClose, Novac, (read my review) so when I was in the mood for a lighthearted, humorous and delightfully fun romance novel I picked up a copy of Lucky Ducks. Jan did not disappoint me. If you have ever read any of Janet Evanovich's funny romance novels (aside from the Stephanie Plum ones which of course I also LOVE!), then you will enjoy Jan's novels. Here is a description of Lucky Ducks and my 5 star review.

Book Description:

Recently divorced, Claire Stone is off to a fresh start. A new city. A job prospect. Wearing her lucky ducks underwear. Things are going great -- until a clumsy lout barrels into her, sending her to the concrete. Her world takes a tumble too when the handsome klutz who scuffed her up turns out to be her new boss.

Engaged twice. Dumped twice. Kasen Isaak has had his fill of green-eyed women, yet his father insists he hire Claire Stone -- a nail-biting claustrophobic with the greenest eyes he's ever seen.

Will green eyes, a run of bad luck, and a slew of idiosyncrasies keep them from finding the greatest luck of all?

My 5 Star Review:

Claire Stone isn't having a good year. She's newly divorced, is pressed (by her father) to take a job she doesn't want working for a man she knows she isn't going to like. It seems the lucky ducks underwear her friend gave her aren't working in her favor.

Kasen Isaak isn't doing so hot himself. His father insists he hire the daughter of his best friend and she turns out to be another green-eyed woman – just like all his ex-girlfriends! But try as he might, he can't seem to brush aside the attraction he has for this crazy woman who wears underwear with ducks on it!

Lucky Ducks is a funny, quick-witted romance novel with a big heart. You'll fall in love with these characters from the get-go and root for them to fall in love despite their flaws and misunderstandings. Author Jan Romes knows how to write a well-timed, humorous romance that keeps you turning pages from the first page to the last.  If you love light-hearted romances, you will love Jan's novels.

Review: Stay Close, Novac! by Jan Romes

Hi all,

I learned about this book through my book cover designer (Tugboat Design) and decided to buy it and give it a try. Am I glad I did. This novel by Jan Romes was fun to read and would make the perfect vacation or beach read. And it's only $1.99 on Amazon! Here is a description of the book and my 5 Star review!

Book Description:

Jessi Novac leads the quiet life of a romance author until someone leaves a series of explicit notes under her windshield wipers and heavy breathing on her answering machine.

Until NYPD can track down the culprit who's trying to scare the bejesus out of her, Jessi hides out at her grandmother's beach house in Myrtle Beach where she hopes to get her bearings. Instead, her life takes an even bigger tilt toward crazy when she meets her clumsy neighbor. She's suspicious of Ian Alexander, and attracted to him at the same time. Their relationship becomes a calamity of errors until strange things start happening at the beach house. Jessi clings to Ian for protection, but soon discovers her heart may be in more danger than her life.

My 5 Star Review

Jessi Novac is a romance author whose life is recently in turmoil. She is being stalked, so she decides to hide out in her grandmother's Myrtle Beach home until the police can find out who is following her. She needs peace and quiet to finish writing her latest novel on time, but instead is sidetracked by the handsome handyman next door. Her life becomes a succession of adventures and misadventures as she realizes she's still being followed and as she also finds she is falling in love with her handyman hero.

Stay Close, Novac! is a fun, witty and face-paced romance novel. The author, Jan Romes, writes in a way that reminds me of Janet Evanovich with her charm and wit. Even though this is a short novel, the story is quite full and you walk away feeling like you have read a book twice its size. I really enjoyed reading Stay Close, Novac! and will definitely read more of Ms. Romes novels.

I am currently reading Yellow Crocus by Laila Ibrahim. I have hardly been able to put it down - it has been that good! I'll write a review when I'm done!
