Maggie's Turn Soon to Hit Shelves at Walmart

Hi all,

I am so excited to share with you that paperback copies of my novel Maggie's Turn have been selected to be placed in 1400 Walmart stores across the country. Thanks to my amazing team at Lake Union Publishing, this next milestone has been made possible. My readers who have bought, read, and reviewed Maggie's Turn have also made this exciting new venture possible.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't excited when I heard the news. I practically screamed with delight - just ask my husband who was the first person I called to tell the exciting news to. I already felt honored that Maggie's Turn was doing so well on Amazon in Kindle format. This is just the icing on the cake.

Maggie's Turn will hit the shelves at selected Walmart stores on October 20th. At that time, I'll run a contest to see how many people can find my book at their Walmart - so keep an eye out for my contest post around that date.

I can't wait!!!

Cheers,

Book Review: Flawless by Jan Moran

Hi all,

I want to share with you this novel by the talented Jan Moran. Flawless is the first book in the series titled The Hostile Beauty Series, and I enjoyed it very much. Below is more about the book and my review.

Flawless (A Hostile Beauty Series Novel Book One)

Jan Moran

Book Description:

Verena Valent is at the helm of her family's legendary Swiss skincare company, which caters to a glamorous clientele in the heart of Beverly Hills. After her parents are killed in an automobile accident, she becomes the sole provider for her younger twin sisters and her grandmother. Instead of attending college with her friends as planned, she rises to the challenge to guide and expand her family's business. She is in the midst of a critical international expansion into Asia when her carefully organized life begins to unravel.

Verena is shaken to discover that her fiancé, Derrick, might be behind a scheme to take over her growing company. While she struggles to save the business that means everything to her, she meets Lance, an executive chef at the Beverly Hills Hotel. She encounters this intriguing man again while on a business trip to Paris, and soon gains a new perspective on love, romance, and relationships.

When the unthinkable occurs and Verena's world collapses, her friends rally around her, among them Scarlett Sandoval, a top intellectual property attorney; Dahlia DuBois, a perfumer from an esteemed line of French perfumers; and Fianna Fitzgerald, a fashion designer with her own trendy boutique.

Ultimately, Verena learns that truth, family, friendship, and love are the unshakable pillars of life. But will she get a second chance in business, or in love?

Flawless is the first book in the Hostile Beauty Series. Follow a group of smart, stylish, entrepreneurial friends as they navigate the turbulences of modern life in the business of beauty. Set in Beverly Hills with action flung across the globe, this engaging series features gutsy, determined best friends, and how they manage to live the lives of their dreams.

Beauty Mark (A Hostile Beauty Series Novel Book Two) by Jan Moran – Book two in the series - is now available for Pre-Sale on:

My 5 Star Review:

Verena Valent is a woman with enormous responsibility on her shoulders. She not only runs the family's high end skincare business in prestigious Beverly Hills, but she's been responsible for raising her younger twin sisters since the death of her parents. Her Grandmother Mia's health also weighs heavily upon her. To complicate things further, the sagging economy forces Verena to seek funds for her business from an unscrupulous source, placing her under even more stress. Can Verena trust her fiancé who works for the funding company to watch out for her interests, or is he the enemy, too?

Flawless is a fast-paced, beautifully written novel about money, power, greed, family, and friendship. Verena and her group of powerful girlfriends are strong, independent women who are a strong support system for each other. With the glamorous backdrop of Beverly Hills where the beautiful people play and often backstab their friends, Flawless has many layers that will pique your interest and keep you reading. If you love novels with interesting characters and a powerful storyline, and with a little love story on the side, you will enjoy Flawless.
(I received a complimentary copy of Flawless from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.)

Book Review: Once Haunted, Twice Shy (Peyton Clark #2) by H.P. Mallory

Hi all,

I received an advance copy of this latest novel by H.P. Mallory from NetGalley and Montlake in exchange for my honest review. I came into this novel without having read book one of the series, but that didn't seem to make a difference. It was fairly easy to catch up with what was going on in the story. I have read other books by H.P. Mallory, so I knew what her writing style was like and I was looking forward to an entertaining read. So…on to the book and the review.

*Check Below for the link to one of H.P. Mallory's books for FREE on Amazon Kindle (Deal may expire so check price before buying.)*

Once Haunted, Twice Shy
Peyton Clark Book Two
H.P. Mallory

Book Description:

After agreeing to let the spirit of Drake Montague inhabit her body, Peyton soon discovers that the twentieth-century French policeman may be dead but his lothario longings sure aren’t. Now she has to find a way to explain to her sweet, sexy boyfriend, Ryan Kelly, that a spirit has taken up residence in her head, whispering French words of affection day and night.

While Peyton is torn between her love for a living man and her growing affection for one deceased, supernatural activity in New Orleans spikes—and something wicked this way comes. With the help of her friends (and a little voodoo), Peyton learns that the demonic spirit of the Axeman may still dwell in her home. To stop bloody history from repeating itself, Peyton will have to travel back a century to confront the Axeman at his roots, with the help of a certain handsome—and suddenly flesh and blood—police officer in the Big Easy.

Coming September 16, 2014 to:

My Review:

Peyton Clark has a problem—she is currently possessed by Drake Montague, a twentieth-century French policeman who happens to also be quite sexy. Peyton hasn't yet been able to tell the new man in her life, Ryan Kelly, about the man who inhabits her body because she knows he won't be very happy about it. On top of that, spirit activity is going crazy in New Orleans, and Peyton finds it is up to her and Drake to figure out what is responsible and stop it. All in a day's work, right?

Once Haunted, Twice Shy has all the right elements for those who love a good paranormal romance story and adore New Orleans. Peyton is a strong character who is trying hard to deal with, not only having a stranger occupying her body, but managing that along with her budding romantic relationship. Strong description brings you into the scenes of the story. Voodoo, demons, and spirits abound in this fast-paced novel with an ending that will have you wanting for more. And luckily, there will be more!

About H.P. Mallory:

I started my writing career as a self-published author and was lucky enough to hit both the Amazon and the Barnes and Noble bestseller’s lists with my two series, the Jolie Wilkins series and the Dulcie O’Neil series. Most recently I hit the New York Times and the USA Today lists with books in the Jolie series.

I signed with Random House (Bantam imprint) to write three books in the Jolie Wilkins series (Witchful Thinking, The Witch is Back and Something Witchy This Way Comes). Now I love the fact that I’m both a traditionally published author as well as a self-published one (with my Dulcie O’Neil series).

I’m a huge fan of anything paranormal and I always have been. I get super excited whenever they have those Twilight Zone Marathon days and anything ghost or vampire related will always attract my attention.

My interests are varied but aside from writing, I’m most excited about traveling. I’m extremely fortunate to have been able to live in England and Scotland, both places really having a profound effect on my books.

Destination Wedding ~ Now in Paperback!

Hi all,

I'm excited to announce that my latest novel, DESTINATION WEDDING, is now available in paperback on Amazon or at CreateSpace. It is also available on Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook.

I love the full cover for Destination Wedding, created by Deborah at Tugboat Design. She also did an amazing job formatting the novel for CreateSpace.

DESTINATION WEDDING is a fun romance novel set on a beautiful tropical island. Here is the book description:

Life is full of surprises…

Claire Martin's life is perfect, or at least she tells herself it is. She owns a successful clothing boutique, has a steady, dependable boyfriend, and a beautiful grown daughter who is about to be married. Sure, Claire's husband of twenty years left her for a younger woman four years ago, but that is all in the past. Now, Claire is looking forward to her daughter's Bahama wedding and spending a week in paradise. The only thing Claire dreads is her ex-husband and his wife will also be on the island. Claire is determined to make the best of it, though. What Claire doesn't realize is ignoring her ex-husband for the week is going to be impossible.

James Martin's life is a mess. His wife of less than four years has made him the most miserable man on earth and now they are in the middle of a messy divorce. He's happy that he can forget her for a week as he goes off to the Bahamas to attend his lovely daughter's wedding. Jim is embarrassed to admit to his daughter and his ex-wife, Claire, that he made the biggest mistake of his life when he left her for another woman, so he makes up a story as to why his new wife didn't come along. When he and Claire are unexpectedly forced upon each other, Jim soon realizes what he's lost and he begins to wonder if he can find a way back into Claire's heart.

Buy Destination Wedding at these retailers:

Destination Wedding ~ A Novel ~ Now Available!

Hi all,

I am so excited to announce that my seventh novel, (yes, seventh!) DESTINATION WEDDING is now published. You can buy it on Amazon Kindle and B&N Nook at the links below. The paperback version is currently being formatted (by my amazing cover designer and formatter, Deborah at Tugboat Design) and will be available soon.

DESTINATION WEDDING was such a fun novel to write. It the midst of this long, terrible, cold winter, it was fun running away (in my book) to an island paradise and writing about these delightful characters. I fell in love with Claire and Jim as they struggled to get along during their week in paradise on their daughter's destination wedding. I hope you fall in love with them, too. They have some pretty hot exchanges, in more ways than one, and they have their tender moments, too.

Destination Wedding is also going on tour in June. Be on the lookout for the tour schedule in an upcoming post.

I hope you enjoy this new novel. After a few days off from writing/editing/promoting, I'm going to get back to the grindstone and start my next novel. What do you think about a cowboy in the next one? Sounds good to me. :)

Book Review: Married to Maggie by Jan Romes

Hi all,

I recently read Jan Romes' latest novel, MARRIED TO MAGGIE, and I can't say enough nice things about it. I have read almost all of Jan's novels and have enjoyed each one very much. MARRIED TO MAGGIE is no exception. In fact, I think it is Jan's absolute best one so far! And the best part is it is the first in the Texas Boys Falling Fast series by Jan. If you love a good romance novel, you'll love novels by Jan Romes!

Here is more about the novel and my five star review.

Married to Maggie

Texas Boys Falling Fast Book 1
Jan Romes

Book Description:

Texas playboy, Ty Vincent, heir to the Vincent Oil fortune needs a short-term wife to convince his grandfather and the Board of Directors that he's changing his ways so they'll name him CEO. Ditching an environmental conference in Atlanta to play in Reno, Ty suffers razor-sharp chest pains at the airport. The pains were becoming a common occurrence that started showing up after he lost his father in a fiery crash a year earlier. The woman who comes to his aid not only helps him with what she can only assume is a heart attack but she also fibs to keep airport security and paparazzi from descending on him. She's brilliant, unemployed and not his type which makes her the perfect choice for a temporary spouse. If he can ignore her extraordinary blue eyes then everything will go according to plan.

Cardiac rehab nurse, Maggie Gray finds herself the victim of hospital downsizing. When T. Loy Vincent, I, a former patient, offers her a million dollars to get his grandson under control, Maggie is pressured by her father to enter into the wife-for-hire scheme. All she has to do is convince Ty Vincent to marry her. When she tracks Ty down at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport to put things in motion, she finds him in the middle of chest issues. The nurse in her takes over and before she knows it she's eyebrow deep in yet another deal. The second she says yes to both agreements, her life is turned upside down. To top it off, she can't seem to curb an annoying attraction for Dallas's most famous womanizer.

Six months. No Sex. No telling each other what to do. It should be a win-win for them both. Will the mayhem of wealth, media attention, meddlesome friends and chemistry so hot it could melt plastic ruin their lives? Or will it be the catalyst for happily-ever-after?

My 5 Star Review:

It is easy to enjoy novels by Jan Romes, and MARRIED TO MAGGIE proves it. She doesn't write basic boy meets girl novels – she writes fun and interesting stories that make you laugh and warm your heart all at once.

In MARRIED TO MAGGIE, we meet the rich, adorable, and somewhat cocky Ty Vincent who is in desperate need of finding a wife, fast. In order to prove he's capable of running the family oil business, he needs to prove he's stopped his playboy ways and is finally settling down. So, what's the best way to do that? Make a deal with a steadfast woman who will make him look good, that's how. When Ty meets Maggie Gray, he's met his match. She won't put up with his foolishness and tells him like it is. But she does agree to a contract to marry him to help him. Why? She needs the money after being laid off from her nursing job. It's just a contract – a deal – and nothing more. Or is it? Has Ty finally met his match?

MARRIED TO MAGGIE is full of twists and turns, making you wonder who is conning who and how it will end up. But no matter who loves who, it is assured you will fall in love with this novel and Jan Romes' creativity!

Book Review: Stutter Creek by Ann Swann

Hi all,

I already knew Ann Swann is a talented writer from reading her previous novels, the two children/middle grade novels in the Phantom Series and her romance All For Love, so when I started reading her latest novel, Stutter Creek, a romantic suspense, I knew I was in for a great read. What I didn't expect was to be completely blown away! Here is more about Ann's latest novel and my 5 star review.

Stutter Creek
Ann Swann

Book Description:

When Beth loses both her father and her husband within the space of a few months, she retreats to the family vacation cabin at Stutter Creek to try and put her life back on track.

Things don't work out just like she planned: She goes looking for an old flame and finds a serial killer instead.

Buy Stutter Creek at:

Also available in paperback at both locations

My 5 Star Review:

Ann Swann is a talented author whether she is writing a scary, suspense middle grade novel or a contemporary romance novel, but she outdid herself when she combined romance with suspense in her latest novel, Stutter Creek.

When Beth finds herself at a crossroads in her life after losing two very important people in her life as well as her daughter marrying and moving across the globe, she finds she can no longer stay in her empty home. She packs her bag and heads to her father's cabin in the woods where she has found peace and contentment in the past. She remembers a young man from her youth who she met one summer at the cabin and reminisces back to a time when she was young, happy, and carefree, wondering what has become of him. What she doesn't know is that there is trouble in her beloved woods, and it's lurking around her cabin, waiting to pounce!

Ann knows how to craft a captivating suspense story. I became immersed in the novel immediately, and couldn't wait to find out what the next chapter held. Her ability to tell the story from the perspective of each character while holding your complete attention is awe inspiring. She builds the story slowly, increasing the pace and tension until you can't wait to read the ending. This novel is a testament to Ann's ability to write the perfect suspense novel. Personally, I hope she continues to write in this genre because she has mastered it completely!

Stutter Creek is a beautifully written, expertly crafted suspense novel. If you enjoy a novel that will keep you glued to its pages, you will love this novel.

Hi all,

I am so happy to announce that my Contemporary Women's Fiction novel WIDOW, VIRGIN, WHORE is now available in paperback on Amazon. This is the first time this title has been available in paperback since the publishing rights were reverted back to me. Yes, you may have seen an older version out there for sale, but I promise you won't want to buy that one. This is the newer, updated version that I have re-edited and given a newer, fresher cover.

New Full Cover for Paperback - Cover Design by Tugboat Design

If you are new to this blog and haven't heard of WIDOW, VIRGIN, WHORE before, then here is the book description:

Three very different womenone houseone devastating diagnosis.

When recently widowed Katherine Samuals purchases a home to share with her son, Christopher, and best friend, Denise Richards, the last thing she expects is to include Denise's outrageous sister, Darla Richards, into the household. But Katherine agrees because she adores Darla's daughter, Chelsea, and feels this is a good opportunity to give the young teen a real home.

Living with Darla is not easy. She parties too much, sleeps around, and speaks her mind without apology. To conservative Katherine and shy Denise, Darla’s behavior is intolerable. Then, Darla is diagnosed with AIDS, and the household is turned upside-down.  Katherine finds herself thrown into Darla's life, first as her caregiver, then as her companion as she explores the devastating lives of AIDS sufferers. Katherine's fledgling writing career flourishes as she shares the experiences of Darla's AIDS group in newspaper articles across the country. And Denise finds true love for the first time, but struggles with the inappropriate timing of her personal happiness. Surprisingly, Darla also finds love−real love−in a time when she needs it the most.

As the household struggles with the stress of living with a terminal illness, Katherine, Denise, and Darla learn just how strong their bond of friendship, and sisterhood, is.

If you are a sister or best friend, you will love this story.

A New Excerpt from Widow, Virgin, Whore

Cover design by Tugboat Design
Hi all,

Widow, Virgin, Whore is the first novel I published in December 2011. Since it was my first attempt at self-publishing, I decided it was time to make a few updates to it. The original cover was sort of a make-shift cover, so I had Deborah at Tugboat Design create a whole new cover for Widow. (Read more here.) I LOVE the new cover. It gives the book a whole new feel and, I believe, gives the reader a better interpretation of the story. I also went through the story again to make sure there weren't any blatant errors in the story or typos that just jumped off the pages. I found a few missing commas and a few sentences that needed tightening or clarifying, but that was about it. But I was happy I took the time to look over the manuscript one more time.

I am currently getting Widow ready to publish in paperback through CreateSpace. It is time to have a paperback copy available, if not only for readers who might enjoy it in paperback, then at least for my mother-in-law who doesn’t own a Kindle, computer, or an iPad to read it on. At least I know of one person who will enjoy Widow in paperback. J  Deborah is fast at work at finishing up the CreateSpace cover as well as adding page numbers and headings to my file, and soon I'll be able to upload and publish it.

Until then, I'd like to share a new excerpt with you from Widow, Virgin, Whore. Widow is a dramatic tale of family and friends dealing with a devastating diagnosis of AIDS. The story is not dark, it is not filled with sex, and it is not just sad. While it has it's heartbreaking moments, it is also funny, uplifting and heartwarming. If you read the many reviews on Amazon or Goodreads, you will see that the majority of people love how real and human this story is while it also makes them smile and cry at the same time. If you love a story full of real emotion – you will love this novel!

Excerpt from Widow, Virgin, Whore

This excerpt is from the middle of the book. Darla has already been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and has just recently found out she also has cancer (very common in AIDS patients). Katherine and Darla have always had a shaky relationship, and Darla doesn't make it any easier for her when she is sick, as you can see from this excerpt.

"I hate this shit!" Darla swiped at the cup of pills before her, spilling them on the kitchen floor. Katherine tightened her jaw and stared hard. It had been a month since she was diagnosed with cancer, and Darla had been on an aggressive program of chemotherapy, going to the hospital for treatments twice a week. It had been hard on her body from the start, and Darla had transferred her pain into anger, taking it out on everyone in the house, especially Katherine.

"I hate all this shit," she repeated. "I hate taking these pills ten times a day, I hate chemotherapy, I hate it all!" She grabbed her glass of orange juice and hurled it at the wall. The glass shattered and juice trickled down the flowered wallpaper.

"Stop it," Katherine demanded. "You're acting like an idiot!"

"I don't care. I can act any way I want. I'm dying. I'm allowed to be an idiot."

"You're not dead yet, but keep this up and I might help you along."

Two sets of eyes met and clashed.

"I might as well be dead than live like this. All I do is throw up. If I'm not throwing up, I feel like throwing up. I can't eat and I can't drink anything. And look at my hair! Look at it!" Darla ran her bony fingers through the thin strands of orange left on her head. "I'm going bald, for Christ's sake. Bald!"

She was ranting and raving so loud, using what little energy her emaciated body had left, that Katherine thought for sure she'd have a heart attack right on the spot.

"Calm down, Darla, before you make yourself sicker."

Darla's eyes burned. "I don't want to calm down. I'm sick of it, you hear? I'm sick of it all!"

Weeks of Darla's outbursts had taken its toll on Katherine. Angrily, she snapped. "Fine then. Die. Go back up to your room and hide from life, like you've been doing for the past month, and just drop dead! You've been worthless the way you're acting anyway, pouting, throwing fits one minute, depressing everyone in the house the next. Your room is filthy, you stink, and your attitude is horse shit!"

"What am I supposed to do? Thank God for making me miserable?"

"God damn you, Darla. You're still alive. Be thankful for that. You can still walk and talk and think. Yes, you feel like shit most of the time, but it could be worse. So instead of sitting in your room, waiting to die, why don't you join in on life until you do die? Dammit! Get off your dead ass and make something of the life you still have left!"

Darla's eyes bulged out so far she looked like she was going to explode. After a brief stare down, she turned and went up to her room, slamming the door.

"Good riddance," Katherine muttered as she fell to her knees and began picking up the shattered glass.

Katherine was at her computer working on the last of her AIDS articles when she heard Chelsea shriek from across the house. In a flash, she was down one flight of stairs, through the kitchen, and up the other flight to join Denise, who had already responded to Chelsea's cry. Chelsea and Denise stood with their mouths wide open, staring at Darla. Katherine took one look at Darla and her mouth dropped, too.

Darla merely smiled back at them, amusement in her eyes. Her hair was shaved off, leaving only a peachy film over her entire head.

"Mom. Why?" Chelsea screeched.

Darla ran a hand over the fuzz. "It was falling out anyway, so I shaved it off. What's the problem? I think it makes me look buff."

"But Mom, you're bald!" Chelsea shrieked.

"It's no big deal. It'll grow back, eventually. Besides, I was only doing what Katie said I should. Making a change."

All eyes fell on Katherine.

"I told you to stop acting like a jerk. I didn't tell you to shave your head," Katherine said defensively.

Darla ran her hand over her head again. "Well, this is a start. It makes me feel tough again. Like Demi Moore in G.I. Jane. In control. And look, I cleaned my room. That should make you happy."

Katherine and the others looked around them. For the first time in weeks, they could see the floor. She'd piled her dirty laundry in one corner, made her bed, and opened the windows to let in fresh air. It was a major improvement.

"Now," Darla announced, "the next thing I need to do is get out of this house. What about that AIDS group you keep telling me about, Kathy? Do they have anything going on tonight?"

Again, everyone stared at Darla as if she'd just flown down from Mars. What happened to the moping, depressed Darla from only a few hours ago?

"I thought you weren't interested in being a part of any AIDS group," Katherine said.

"Well, now I am. Is there anything going on with them or not?"

Katherine stared at the others with raised eyebrows. Surely, Darla had gone schizophrenic. "I think they have a fundraiser going on tonight," Katherine finally answered. "They have Bingo every other week at a place in Fremont."

"Great, then that's where we're going. Bingo."

"We?" Katherine asked, surprised.

"Of course. You don't expect me to go there alone, do you?"

"But I hadn't planned on going."

"Well, now you can plan it. You were the one who said I needed to do something, right?"

Katherine closed her eyes and sighed. Me and my big mouth, she thought.

Whoever You Are by Author Donna Marie Lanheady

Hi all,

When I first discovered the world of Indie Authors, one of the first books I read by an indie was Where Secrets Lie by Donna Marie Lanheady. I was very impressed. Ms. Lanheady created a well-rounded story with interesting characters that I enjoyed reading very much. This month Ms. Lanheady has published her second novel Whoever You Are and so generously offered me a copy to review (which I will do in a future post). I have started reading it and am already intrigued by the story in the first few pages. I'd like to share with you information about Ms. Lanheady's new release and an excerpt from the novel. What a great book to pick up for your weekend read!

Whoever You Are
Donna Marie Lanheady

Book Description:

What defines you…

Are you defined by your family, your career, your accomplishments? What happens when something you think defines you changes?

Emily McGinn, a recurring character from Where Secrets Lie, believes she knows exactly who she is and where she belongs in the world, until she receives an inheritance from an unknown benefactor. Uncovering the source of the inheritance leads Emily to discover buried truths undermining what she thought was a straightforward life. As the truths alter Emily’s perception of the people closest to her, her perception of herself shifts as well.

Set in the unique foothills community of Boulder, Colorado and its environs, Whoever You Are questions not only how we define ourselves, but also how we define family and whether we bear any responsibility for the actions of those who came before us.

Their ability to make something imaginary seem real is what spoke to her, got into her blood, and would not let her rest. She had to write!

Donna loves to hear from readers and listen to their perspectives on her novels. It fascinates her how people can look at the same thing and see it in so many different ways, so if a reader ever wants to tell her what they think or just wants learn more about her, find her on

Chapter 1 – A Few Regrets

“Forgive me for saying this, Grace, but I’m concerned about Sterling’s reaction.” James removed his reading glasses and laid them atop the papers on his desk.
Grace shifted her gaze away from him.
“Yes, I understand, Jimmy. I just can’t deny this child any longer.”
Grace was the only person who called him that anymore. Coming from anyone else, it would make him cringe. However, the reality embodied in Grace’s appearance dimmed his smile.
Despite the weariness Grace’s illness etched upon her face, her sitting posture remained erect. Her silver hair was styled in a classic bob, her makeup sparse and tasteful. The tailored suit she wore held its lines even on her thinning frame.
Word was, Grace had a heart condition that could not be cured in spite of having the financial means to pursue any treatment. Given her labored breathing and her skin’s bluish hue, the doctors must be running out of options. Given these changes to her will, Grace must be running out of time.
“Would you like to include a personal letter to explain?” James asked.
“No, I’ll tell Sterling about the changes myself.”
“Actually, I was thinking about the girl. This will likely be quite a shock for her.”
To say the least. James had been their lawyer and friend back then too, back when Hunter insisted they renounce the child for the sake of decorum. It was clear to James then, doing so broke Grace’s heart. It was clear to him now, her heart never mended.
“I considered it,” Grace said, “but how can I possibly condense a lifetime into a letter?” And the choices. How in the world would she ever justify the choices?
James fiddled with his fountain pen, which Grace had given him last year for his birthday. Every year it was the same gift just a different model, a different color or design, and each year he looked forward to seeing what she chose. Odds were, the pen in his hand would be the last.
“No,” Grace said, “it’s better not to try. A letter like that would just muddy the waters. I don’t want to burden her with empty explanations or pleas for forgiveness. What’s done is done.”
It was too late to give this child anything but a token and an opportunity to discover who she was. It’d be up to the child to seize the opportunity or not.
“If she asks you any questions, Jimmy, just point her in the right direction and let her find her own way. If she’s anything like her mother, she’ll do just fine.”
“All right, Grace, whatever you say."
