Book Review: Once Haunted, Twice Shy (Peyton Clark #2) by H.P. Mallory

Hi all,

I received an advance copy of this latest novel by H.P. Mallory from NetGalley and Montlake in exchange for my honest review. I came into this novel without having read book one of the series, but that didn't seem to make a difference. It was fairly easy to catch up with what was going on in the story. I have read other books by H.P. Mallory, so I knew what her writing style was like and I was looking forward to an entertaining read. So…on to the book and the review.

Once Haunted, Twice Shy
Peyton Clark Book Two
H.P. Mallory

Book Description:

After agreeing to let the spirit of Drake Montague inhabit her body, Peyton soon discovers that the twentieth-century French policeman may be dead but his lothario longings sure aren’t. Now she has to find a way to explain to her sweet, sexy boyfriend, Ryan Kelly, that a spirit has taken up residence in her head, whispering French words of affection day and night.

While Peyton is torn between her love for a living man and her growing affection for one deceased, supernatural activity in New Orleans spikes—and something wicked this way comes. With the help of her friends (and a little voodoo), Peyton learns that the demonic spirit of the Axeman may still dwell in her home. To stop bloody history from repeating itself, Peyton will have to travel back a century to confront the Axeman at his roots, with the help of a certain handsome—and suddenly flesh and blood—police officer in the Big Easy.

My Review:

Peyton Clark has a problem—she is currently possessed by Drake Montague, a twentieth-century French policeman who happens to also be quite sexy. Peyton hasn't yet been able to tell the new man in her life, Ryan Kelly, about the man who inhabits her body because she knows he won't be very happy about it. On top of that, spirit activity is going crazy in New Orleans, and Peyton finds it is up to her and Drake to figure out what is responsible and stop it. All in a day's work, right?

Once Haunted, Twice Shy has all the right elements for those who love a good paranormal romance story and adore New Orleans. Peyton is a strong character who is trying hard to deal with, not only having a stranger occupying her body, but managing that along with her budding romantic relationship. Strong description brings you into the scenes of the story. Voodoo, demons, and spirits abound in this fast-paced novel with an ending that will have you wanting for more. And luckily, there will be more!

About H.P. Mallory:

I started my writing career as a self-published author and was lucky enough to hit both the Amazon and the Barnes and Noble bestseller’s lists with my two series, the Jolie Wilkins series and the Dulcie O’Neil series. Most recently I hit the New York Times and the USA Today lists with books in the Jolie series.

I signed with Random House (Bantam imprint) to write three books in the Jolie Wilkins series (Witchful Thinking, The Witch is Back and Something Witchy This Way Comes). Now I love the fact that I’m both a traditionally published author as well as a self-published one (with my Dulcie O’Neil series).

I’m a huge fan of anything paranormal and I always have been. I get super excited whenever they have those Twilight Zone Marathon days and anything ghost or vampire related will always attract my attention.

My interests are varied but aside from writing, I’m most excited about traveling. I’m extremely fortunate to have been able to live in England and Scotland, both places really having a profound effect on my books.

Book Review: Reflections (Whisper Cape Book 2) by Susan Griscom

Hi all,

I just finished reading Reflections, the second book in the Whisper Cape series by Susan Griscom. Susan delights us by continuing with the story begun in Whisper Cape – and I have to say, I enjoyed the sequel as much as I did the first book. Here is more about the novel and my five star review.

Reflections

(Whisper Cape Book 2)

Susan Griscom

Book Description:

Gerry has loved Maia from the very first moment he laid eyes on her and now that she’s pregnant with his child, he’s over the moon with happiness. Likewise, Maia is overjoyed about having Gerry’s baby, except when she begins seeing and hearing an old woman who warns Maia about the pregnancy, Maia starts to think she is losing her mind. But Maia’s nightmare has only just begun...

A most sought after beautiful woman, the talented lead singer in an up and coming rock band, sets her sights on Gerry determined to rekindle an old flame. But murder befalls the sleepy town of Whisper Cape once again, creating suspicion and betrayal, and a love once considered invincible, begins to crumble and fall apart.

My 5 Star Review

Reflections continues the story from Whisper Cape but this time it zeros in on the relationship of Addison's aunt, Maia, and Maia's love, Gerry. Maia and Gerry are expecting a baby, and Gerry is thrilled at becoming a father. But when Maia learns she is expecting twins, the anxiety begins, especially when she is plagued by cryptic messages from an old woman. Problems ensue when the beautiful lead singer from the band Gerry has hired sets her eyes on Gerry. And let's not forget Addie and Cael and the magical world they and Gerry belong to that stirs up problems once again in the quiet town of Whisper Cape.

Once again, author Susan Griscom delivers an intriguing paranormal suspense story that is also filled with sensual relationships between the characters. Her writing style is vivid, and it draws you into the story quickly and makes you want to keep reading to find out what is happening with these interesting characters she's created. Susan does an excellent job of continuing the story of Whisper Cape, and leaves you wanting for more. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys the paranormal/suspense/romance genre.

I hope you will give this series a try. Currently, the books are priced at only $0.99 cents – an extraordinary deal for these well-written novels.

Cheers,

Synopsis:

Book three in the Whisper Cape Series.

Gerry, Addie and Cael almost captured Careen’s murderer but lost Cael in the battle. Is he alive? If so, will he return? And the bigger question, thanks to Gerry's handiwork, will Cael remember Addie? Is their love lost with him?

Addie’s family and friends think she should keep the relationship a secret. Just what she needs, more secrets and on top of everything else, someone stole the crystal. How is she supposed to get over the loss of her lover, a lover she'd barely had for only a few short months and deal with the secret of the lost crystal at the same time?

Aiden wants nothing more than to help Addie overcome her grief and get over Cael. Or is that all he wants? What happens when too many people know the secret and someone slips up?

An unedited Excerpt from A Secret Fate

For the umpteenth time, over the past two weeks, Addie recited the words over and over again in her head, begging, pleading, Cael, please remember me. Please remember you love me.

Dragging her useless, helpless, and now rail-thin of a frame from the bed—their bed, his bed—she stumbled into the bathroom, hardly recognizing the person in the mirror. The sunken, dark eyes, her indented cheekbones, only made her brown eyes look larger and more recessed, giving her face a hollow look. Well, that was fine, now her face matched her hollow and empty soul.

She couldn’t work, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t eat. Gerry threatened to give her job to Darcy permanently if she didn’t snap out of it and get her rear end into the bar soon. She didn’t care. Why should she? Let Darcy have the damn job. She didn’t need it. She had her trust fund, didn’t she? She couldn’t face going in there, seeing all those people, everyone asking how she was getting along … without Cael—the unspoken part of the sentence. Well, how the hell did they think she was? She just lost the man she loved. Lost her dad the year before. Who would be next? Who would she lose next? Maia? The Twins who weren’t even born yet? Unthinkable. But, as the old saying went, bad things happened in threes. Maybe if she stayed home, away from other people, nobody else would die or disappear. Her family, friends, they’d all taken turns checking in on her, Darcy one day, Maia another. Gerry, Cael’s uncle Bart even stopped by. Someone, once a day would come knocking on her door, trying to coax her out of the house. “Not ready,” she’d say. “I need time.” How much time would it take? How much time does a person normally require before they learn to cope with the loss of a loved one? Learn to cope? She didn’t want to learn to cope. Addie hadn’t had much time with Cael to begin with. She felt cheated. Resentful and cheated that she didn’t get to love and enjoy her soul mate for any longer than only a few short months. According to Maia, Cael and Addie were fated. She and Cael had joked, laughing about it being a secret fate because of Addie’s secluded and sheltered childhood. Well, fate was cruel, wasn’t it?

About Susan

Susan Griscom daydreams often. And sometimes her daydreams interfere with her daydreams not to mention real life. Because, let’s face it, her character’s lives are so much more exciting. Sometimes it’s young adult or new adult or just plain old mainstream fiction and sometimes it’s paranormal romance, where her playing field delves into a different milieu than the usual vampires and werewolves. Some day she might write about fangs and fur, but for now she prefers sticking to strong heroes and heroines confronted with extraordinary forces of nature, powers and abilities beyond the norm, mixed with a little romance to get the blood boiling.

Susan lives in the Sierra Foothills in Northern California with her very romantic husband, her small yippy dog, Riley, and her humongous black cat, Saké. Her family consists of his and hers; four wonderful sons and one beautiful daughter, and seven grand angels.

Susan loves when a story takes hold and pulls her into the fantasy, that's magic.

Author Interview: Rebekkah Ford

Hi all,

Today I am talking with Rebekkah Ford, author of the supernatural/paranormal novel Beyond The Eyes, the first book in the series. Rebekkah has an interesting background with the paranormal which she shares with us in her interview.

Author Interview: Rebekkah Ford

Tell us a little about yourself

I’ve been writing stories since I was a kid, and I’ve always been fascinated with the paranormal world. I don’t take things at face value, though. I’ve learned that from my dad when he did his paranormal investigations. I seek the truth in everything. If something is unexplained, yet there’s a possibility it can be true or exist, I keep an open mind about it.

Can you tell us a little about your debut novel Beyond the Eyes?

It’s basically about good versus evil, but it’s not linear. It’s packed full with everything: romance, love triangle, heartache, horror, friendship, humor, mystery and suspense. It also shows Paige having to deal with her emotional baggage that’s been weighing on her heart since her father died when she was four. But she has to in order to move onto the next phase in her life.

When a ghostly voice whispers a haunting message to seventeen-year-old Paige Reed, her life takes a nightmarish turn, changing it forever.

This book, along with the other two in this series throws light on some of life’s darker mysteries.

Have you ever wondered why some people are vicious? Have you ever wondered if they had a soul? What if they were soulless and malevolent entities were able to possess them? Paige discovers the answers to those questions and more.

Your parents investigated UFO sightings, ghost hauntings and Bigfoot sightings when you were growing up. How did their activities inspire your writing about the paranormal?

The stories, experience, and mystery of the paranormal world is what inspires my writing. I’m fortunate enough to have grown up in that environment because my knowledge, experience and interest in the unknown is what aids me in my stories. It also fuels my imagination, which is great.

Your job as a paranormal/supernatural writer is to scare the reader. Do you sometimes scare yourself when you're writing?

Not really. I more or less trip out on it because sometimes I don’t know where the information I’m writing is coming from. And then I think about automatic writing, which is when a spiritual force is guiding your hand, using you as a tool to get her words down. Now that is kind of freaking.

Do you have a "day" job? If so, when do you find time to write?

Yes, I do have a day job, and I write every chance I get. I get up an hour early every morning and write, and then I write in the evenings and on the weekends.

Beyond the Eyes is Book One in a series. When do you expect to publish Book Two?

Probably at the beginning of 2013.

Are you working on any other ideas for novels aside from this series?

No, but I do have a character and an opening scene that keeps pestering me. I do plan on writing more books after this series. The next one will probably be a stand alone novel.

What books and authors do you enjoy reading?

I actually have quite a few:

1984 by George Orwell. Interview With Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, Queen Of The Damned, and The Witching Hour by Anne Rice. The Stand by Stephen King. All of the Harry Potter books by JK Rowling. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

Is there anything else you'd like to tell your readers?

I just want to thank my readers for their support. There are no words that can convey how deeply I appreciate them.

Beyond the Eyes
Rebekkah Ford

Book Description:

Paige knows evil exists in this world, but she never imagined it would want something from her.

After a ghostly voice whispers a haunting message to seventeen-year-old Paige Reed, Paige’s life takes a nightmarish turn. Unwilling to tell her friends about the supernatural occurrences happening in her life, Paige feels more alone than ever–until she meets Nathan Caswell.

Nathan is not only hot, but seems to peer into Paige’s soul, evoking a magnetic energy between them that cannot be denied. But he’s no ordinary guy. He tracks dark spirits, and becomes alarmed when they set their sights on Paige.

And then there are the two power-hungry dark spirits who believe Paige can find King Solomon’s magical ring for them, because when her father was alive, he was close to finding it. If Paige doesn’t comply with their demands, they’ll kill her.

Paige is forced to dig deep into her father’s past and unearths shocking secrets about him and his bloodline. With the past and present colliding, Paige is only sure about two things in her life: she needs to outwit the dark spirits to stay alive, and she’s completely and helplessly in love with Nathan.

Author Bio:

Rebekkah Ford grew up in a family that dealt with the paranormal. Her parents' Charles and Geri Wilhelm were the Directors of the UFO Investigators League in Fairfield, Ohio, back in the 1970s. They also investigated ghost hauntings and Bigfoot sightings in addition to UFO's. Growing up in this type of environment and having the passion for writing is what drove Rebekkah at an early age to write stories dealing with the paranormal. At one point in her life, she thought she wanted to be a journalist, and although she enjoyed writing articles, she quickly discovered her real passion was writing fiction. Her fascination with the paranormal is what led her to write the Beyond the Eyes series.

I began to fidget. I’m not a kiss and tell kind of girl. Usually Melissa was the one to tell me about her romantic interludes. She felt comfortable telling me things we might not otherwise divulge to others, but I did not.

I think she may have enjoyed putting me on the spot. Perhaps it was retribution for not coming back from the pond sooner? Regardless, she wasn’t letting me out of this until she got the information she wanted to know.

“I don’t know about his, um, exact measurements,” I admitted red-faced.

Melissa looked at me in disbelief. “What do you mean you don’t know?”

“We were in the pond. I didn’t see anything from the waist up,” I replied.

“And you were going to feed me that fish?” she shrieked, pushing me over. “That’s disgusting!”

She stood and knocked the bowl over, its contents spilling on the ground. I laughed so hard at her conclusion that I couldn’t get off the floor. Tears formed in my eyes and my sides spasmed so hard it became difficult to breathe.
